The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences will offer a Dermatology Residency position for the 2005-2006 Academic Year. Descriptions are available on the VIRMP website ( http://www.virmp.org ). - Program Dates : August 1, 2005 through July 31, 2007. Total residency program is continuance based upon performance.
- Salary : $23,070/year (with salary increases each successive year of the program)

- Foreign Applicants: New immigration regulations require that non-US citizens obtain an H1B visa to participate in a residency program. To obtain an H1B visa requires paperwork that generally cannot be completed in time to meet the program start date without paying a premium-processing fee of $1,000 to the Immigration and Naturalization Service. This is in addition to the normal processing fee of $130.00. (Additional fees are charged for any dependents.) Applicants are responsible for all fees associated with the visa process. The H1B visa process is time consuming and you will need to start the process immediately upon acceptance to the program.
The appointments will be as an Instructor/Resident and, as such, the appointee may participate in all faculty benefits except the retirement program.
Professional liability insurance will be provided. You may hold a full or clinical academic license. Licensure fees will be reimbursed by the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: (Dermatology)
(available 2005-2007)
The selected candidates will be appointed as an Instructor/Resident in the department and will be expected to participate in all aspects of the teaching responsibilities within the veterinary professional program under the supervision of the senior faculty. This is a two-year residency program designed to provide advanced clinical training in the specialty of veterinary dermatology. The intent of the program is to prepare the resident for the specialty board examination of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (A.C.V.D.).
Small Animal Clinical Dermatology - Nine (9) months of receiving referral clinical cases/year. Primary case responsibility will be emphasized during this time period.
Dermatohistopathology - During the entire program the resident will be responsible for interpretation and review of all skin biopsies for which the resident has primary patient care responsibility. There are also formal Dermatohistopathology Review Sessions every 2 weeks for 2 hours, which are supervised by ACVD Diplomates (Dr. Rosser, Dr. Bloom, and Dr. Petersen), and an ACVP Diplomate (Dr. Steficek).
Dermatology Journal Club, and Basic and Applied Science Review – Regular reading and critical review of dermatology related articles in JAVMA, AJVR, JAAHA & Vet Derm, as well as several human dermatology journals held every 2 weeks for 2 hours. This is followed by a 1 hour review session on selected topics relating to the Basic and Applied Sciences.
Large Animal Clinical Dermatology - Residents will gain exposure to equine and food animal dermatology cases by serving as a consultant for the large animal medicine service under the supervision of a Diplomate of the A.C.V.D.
Comparative Dermatology - Required attendance at one Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, and required attendance at the Michigan Dermatological Society's quarterly educational forums.
Course Requirements - Attendance in VM 554 - Hematological, Oncological, and Dermatological Diseases (41 hours of lecture) during the fall semester of the first year, plus attendance at courses and meetings of various dermatology professional associations.
Teaching Requirements - To prepare and present one lecture in VM-554 during the Fall Semester of the first year of the program and two lectures during the Fall Semester of the second year. To participate in and/or conduct dermatology rounds and aid in the instruction of senior veterinary students.
Rounds and Seminar Requirements - The candidate will attend and participate in the 1 hour Resident's Seminar held every Friday morning, and the 2 hour Dermatohistopathology Review Sessions, 2 hour Dermatology Journal Club, and 1 hour Basic and Applied Science Review held every other Friday.
Project Requirements - To prepare and submit a proposal for a research project which is to be completed by the end of the second year of the training program.
Publication Requirement - One (1) scientific paper is to be completed and submitted for publication in a peer reviewed/refereed journal that meets the approval of the primary instructor of the program.
Documentation of Primary Patient Care - The resident is required to maintain a case log of all dermatologic cases seen during the residency program.
Annual Residency Report - Residents must submit an annual residency report to the A.C.V.D. Education Committee.
